With its wooden tables, chalkboard wall and mosaic floors, Brothaus certainly matches popular independent cafés in the décor stakes, but there’s a distinct German edge – and he goes by the name of Uwe, the master baker.

Uwe is up every day at 2am baking the hotel’s breads. There’s a wonderful aroma coming from the kitchen, which diners can peer into as they take a seat inside the café. When the weather cools, the L-shaped patio overlooking the Dubai Canal will be very special.

The menu features a selection of breakfast favourites with a German twist. The eggs Benedict ‘our style’ (Dhs50), for example, is served on toasted onion bread with braised beef cheeks and sweet mustard hollandaise, while your eggs can be served with a side of frankfurters or nurnberger sausages. We enjoyed a very tasty alternative version, which was served with sweet potato rosti (Dhs50), smoked salmon, saffron hollandaise and a green pea purée. The two dainty rostis, topped with poached eggs and hollandaise could only have been better if they were bigger.

The Brass

When the second phase of City Walk was unveiled earlier this year, The Brass immediately caught our attention. This was mainly down to its baby blue and gold façade, retro-style lamps and impressive coffee menu, with everything from a classic Americano to an Egyptian walnut sahleb and signature lavender honey latte.

As it turns out, The Brass does more than a good cup of joe and has recently added a breakfast menu, which, while small, has all the bases covered. The smoked salmon sandwich (Dhs49) made a great savoury start; the cream cheese kept the dark rye bread moist and complemented the delicious salmon, which was topped with peppery greens and crunchy slices of fennel.

Shakshouka is quickly becoming a breakfast menu staple and the one at The Brass (Dhs38) strayed from tradition, swapping fried eggs for scrambled, while its vegetables were cooked in a heart-warming stew. A little extra spice would have elevated this to star status. 

For those with a sweet tooth, the beautifully indulgent chocolate hazelnut French toast (Dhs38) was strongly recommended by our waitress – and rightly so. Cutting into the thick slab of warm, fluffy, pan-fried brioche gave way to oozing chocolate sauce, and the sprinkling of chopped pistachios added a crunchy touch. The sugar buzz kept us energised right up until lunch.
