Square watches: redolent of the Art Deco era and thus a staple of pre-WW2 watch design, yet in terms of popularity something of a poor cousin to their round-cased brethren ever since protection from the elements trumped aesthetics (square cases were once notoriously hard to render water- and dust-proof). However, possibly thanks to a certain ‘smart’ watch, square-cased timepieces are gaining a foothold. Not convinced? Check out these eight excellent models that refuse to cut corners….

Hugo Boss Square Quartz Chronograph
More than a shade of TAG Heuer’s ground-breaking Monaco styling in this piece from Hugo Boss – which comes on a perforated silicone strap and and highlights the chronograph function’s start/stop button in red. One for the racers. £275, hugoboss.com

TAG Heuer Monaco Calibre 12
A must-have in any watch collector’s arsenal – and for good reason. Heuer’s square-cased chronograph upended the apple cart when it was launched at the tail end of the Sixties, and reimagined how a ‘tool watch’ could look. Beloved of auto racers and style-gurus alike, it remains in the TAG Heuer playbook to this day, its case regularly serving as a vessel for newer technologies. £4,050. tagheuer.co.uk
